Practically every form of medical research brings significant challenges. These challenges are perhaps even more significant when working to coordinate research across multiple institutions in different states across the USA. With 10 studies at different leading institutions, our surgeons spend a considerable number of hours every month conducting and coordinating our research. Moreover, the MASH Study Group faces out-of-pocket costs required to properly, safely and effectively collect, store and analyze the research data. The group also faces costs involved with the sharing of its medical findings.
The MASH Study Group faces two significant expenses in the running of our studies. The biggest expense is the license fees for the data collection software. In 2016, the cost per surgeon, investigator or center was $3,600.00 per year. That fee is covered by our individual doctors or via their institution. In most cases, our doctors pay that fee out of their own pockets.
The other major cost to our group involves the cost of publication for our study findings. While the cost of publication varies depending on the journal, costs for publishing study results can range as high as $1,000.00 per published article or report.
While our doctors earn an income for running their practices and treating their patients, they are involved in the MASH Study Group on a pro bono volunteer basis. They are not paid for their research. The many hours our medical professionals spend conducting studies, and, reviewing and studying the data is all done in the interest of improving medical science and patient care.
In 2018, the Multicenter Orthopedic Study Groups, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was launched to advance orthopedic medicine and outcomes for patients through research and education, and to seek charitable donations to offset the costs of this research. The Multicenter Orthopedic Study Groups, Inc., is the non-profit behind the MASH Study Group. The MASH Study Group is eager to build support from both corporate and individual donors.
